Can dance and choreography be owned, collected or belong to someone? As the third piece in the ‘Copyrights Series’ by Chung Da Soul, Quotation Dance raises further questions about the authorship, ownership, and copyrights of dance and choreography. On stage, she cites passages from other artists’ works while constantly revealing their source. From a performer’s body, object to sound and light, elements of choreographic works can never be fully replicated, and such ‘imperfect quotations’ form imaginary choreography and redefine the position of the author.
CHUNG Da Soul
Chung Da Soul is a choreographer based in Seoul and Hamburg. Her choreographic interests lay on the things that do not dance in choreography and the potential of choreography as social and political apparatus. Her works investigate the ontology of choreography and addresses the question about systems and methods of possessing dance and choreography.
She studied dance at Ewha Womans University in Seoul as well as at Folkwang University of Arts in Essen, Germany. In 2018 she received her Masters in Arts from the Performance Studies at University Hamburg. Currently she is a resident artist at Seoul Dance Center.
