Beyond Together transforms a traditional Korean ritual mask into a living body. Inspired by the Gaksi mask from Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori – a Korean shamanic masked ritual – the piece gives physical voice to histories shaped by silence, restraint, and unspoken presence.
Unable to face forward, its mouth closed, the Gaksi mask embodies generations of women whose expression was contained rather than spoken. Through a precise and ritual-driven choreographic language, Beyond Together translates this silence into movement, allowing memory and emotion to resurface on today’s stage.
Premiered as a duet and continuously re-created over nearly a decade in solo, duet, and group versions, the work has become choreographer Jung Bo Kyung’s signature piece—where tradition does not represent the past, but actively becomes the present.
JUNG Bo Kyung
Choreographer Jung Bo Kyung debuted in 2007 and gained international recognition in 2010 after winning the Grand Prix (the first Asian recipient) at the ACT Festival Bilbao with ON THE ROAD. She has since been invited to major international platforms across Europe and Asia, including ACT Festival Bilbao and Arriaga Theatre (Spain), Summer Nostos Festival (Greece), Festival International de Danse S.O.U.M. (France), Tanssin Lumoa International Gala (Finland), Japan Solo & Duo Dance Project (Japan), and Taipei Artist Village (Taiwan).
Her work transforms Korean traditional motifs into a contemporary choreographic language grounded in ritual, physicality, and philosophical reflection. In 2019, ONE received both the Best Work Award at the Korea Dance Festival and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award. In 2020, she became the first Korean traditional dance choreographer selected as an Arts Council Korea Partner Artist. Her signature work Beyond Together continues to tour internationally.
