On tour buses speeding down the highway, passengers would rise from their seats and surrender themselves to the music, dancing with such abandon that the bus became a moving dance floor. What might appear to be simple entertainment was also a collective release – a temporary escape from the pressures of everyday life and an almost ritualistic act of dancing away ‘han’, or deep-seated sorrow, until only ‘shinmyeong’, a shared sense of exhilaration and ecstatic joy, remained.

Choi Jong-in is a visionary choreographer redefining modern dance by blending traditional Korean movement with contemporary global trends. Renowned for a signature hybrid style that fuses classical foundations with urban genres like hip-hop and Afro dance, he seamlessly bridges high artistry and mainstream culture.
After gaining early acclaim with awards at CheonAn Dance Film Festival (CADFF) and Seoul Dance Film Festival (SeDaFF) in 2019, Choi solidified his standing in 2020 at age 27 through his masterpiece Eo. The work earned him top honours, including Best Choreographer at the Young Choreographers’ Creative Performance and the Minister of Culture Award at the Korea Dance Awards.
