Ayane NAKAGAWA
Ayane Nakagawa studied two distinct classical dance forms from an early age – classical ballet and traditional Japanese dance – and later trained in street dance before majoring in theatre at J. F. Oberlin University. Her work is noted for its exploration of the relationship between the individual and society, the historical traces sedimented within the body, and an expressive approach unafraid of confronting taboo subjects.
In recent years, her work, which seeks to connect the forms and aesthetics of traditional performing arts with the context of contemporary dance, has received significant acclaim. She has also been highly regarded for projects which create spaces for neutral collaboration with practitioners of traditional Japanese dance. Through these works, Nakagawa has developed a distinctive choreographic and directorial style that brings diverse dance forms into dialogue through a theatrical perspective.
